What happened really?

It was around 4:52 p.m., when officers responded to a 911 call of a robbery in progress, as reported by Modesto Police. The call was said to be made from a jewelry store. There was an initial report saying shots were fired, however officers arrived on scene within minutes and determined that no shots were fired, the release said. Also according to the report released, the four male suspects used a sledgehammer to break glass at the business they were robbing, causing the loud noise. The loud noise that was heard was the suspects using the sledgehammer to smash glass inside the jewelry store. Police said the suspects quickly grabbed as much as they could and took off. Police were quick to counter rumors, spread quickly through social media, that there had been a shooting.

The Results of the False Report

Because the call was originally for shots fired, multiple police officers were dispatched to the mall as a precaution. Several people were hurt while running from the area, but the police department said none of the injuries were major. The officers secured nearby businesses until it was determined there wasn’t a shooting. Numerous officers responded to the mall and surrounding businesses to security check the businesses and citizens, to ensure everyone was safe,” police said. Surveillance footage was captured of the suspects inside the store and on the run outside the mall, photos of the four suspects were later released by the police.

The Suspects

With the pictures that were released by the police, the suspects all appeared to be young adult males. One was wearing a light grey hooded sweatshirt and jeans. The second suspect was wearing a red, white and blue hoodie and baggy pants. The third was wearing a dark grey hoodie and grey pants. The fourth was wearing a light blue ball cap, a blue puffer jacket and grey track pants with a white stripe down the side. An anonymous tip helped Modesto police capture two suspects in connection with a smash-and-grab robbery at a mall.

2 Arrested in Modesto Mall Robbery; Still At Large

Police said 22-year-old Phelan Parker was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Stockton. Modesto police then arrested 23-year-old Kyrin McKenzie in Stockton also. Both are charged with robbery and conspiracy. The jewelry was all taken from Valliani Jewelers, with the amount not being disclosed by the police. Investigators are now looking for a third suspect, 28-year-old Wilfredo Robles Jr. for the same charges. Additionally, police are looking for the fourth suspect who entered the mall and ran off with Parker, McKenzie and Robles Jr., and a fifth suspect who is believed to be the getaway driver.
